Our U13 Hurlers hosted Clonaslee on Monday evening in their fifth Hurling League game.
This game started like all other games; the boys pulled on the Port jersey with pride and stood tall , in anticipation of the challenge ahead. Clonaslee hit hard and a powerful attack on the lads developed. The first 10 mins were played mainly in the Port half and midfield area. Port were struggling to establish control of the game and hold possession of the ball to create breaks in the Clonaslee defences. As the first half progressed the intensity of the game increased but Port just could not find their rhythm. The determination was there, and they could not be faulted for their efforts. With four points on the score board , they were caught off guard with two goals by Clonaslee bringing a half time scoreline of Portarlington 0.04 (4), Clonaslee St Manmans 2.05 (11).
The second half started with a devastating blow to Port as Clonaslee dropped in another two goals within 7 minutes. Clonaslee closed down any advancement towards their scoring area and the next 10 minutes saw heavy pressure on the midfield and backline areas. Port were realising the thirteen point difference and did their best to focus on keeping possession while minimising errors. Two more goals were conceded and with five minutes to go, it took all that these lads had, to keep the heads up and continue. The last sixty seconds of the game saw Port sustain two injuries to their players. The final whistle was blown on what can only be described as an uncomfortable end to a hurling match
